Perry Thompson Plans to Enter the Transfer Portal

A dated Dec. 8 snapshot, updated with portal timing and later commitment context.

December 8, 2025 | Iron Bowl History Staff

As of December 8, public reports said Auburn wide receiver Perry Thompson planned to enter the NCAA transfer portal when the 2026 football window opened. This was a notable roster-development item, but the earlier "mass exodus" framing overstated what could be verified at that time.

What Was Verified Then

On3 reported on December 6 that Thompson planned to enter the portal and had two years of eligibility remaining. ESPN's player page listed Thompson's 2025 Auburn production at 17 catches for 154 yards and no touchdowns.

Recruiting Context

Thompson was a highly rated 2024 prospect from Foley, Alabama, and his Auburn signing had carried rivalry interest because Alabama was part of his recruitment. That background is enough context; the article does not need to describe him as a "crown jewel" or imply motive for leaving.

Later Context

On3's player database later listed Thompson as committed to Minnesota on January 5, 2026. That later destination is useful as an update, but it should not be folded back into the December 8 article as if it were known on publication day.

Other Auburn Movement

AuburnRoundtable's December 17 snapshot listed Thompson alongside other players who had voiced portal intentions, including Antonio Coleman, Caleb Wheatland, Raion Strader and others. The same report noted that Auburn had not yet added portal players because the window did not officially open until January.
