2024 Iron Bowl Recap: Alabama 28, Auburn 14
Alabama beat Auburn 28-14 on November 30, 2024 at Bryant-Denny Stadium. This revision keeps the verified score and game shape while removing inflated rivalry language and correcting several player-stat details.
Verified Game Shape
ESPN's box score lists Alabama leading 7-0 after the first quarter, 14-6 at halftime and 28-14 after the third quarter. The fourth quarter was scoreless. Alabama entered the game No. 13 and moved to 9-3, while Auburn fell to 5-7.
That quarter-by-quarter shape matters because the final score can look more comfortable than the flow of the game. Auburn repeatedly created chances through takeaways, but Alabama controlled enough third downs and finishing drives to keep the game from becoming a one-possession fourth-quarter finish.
Milroe and the Alabama Run Game
Jalen Milroe completed 18 of 24 passes for 256 yards and rushed 17 times for 104 yards and three touchdowns. Justice Haynes added the other Alabama touchdown. The earlier version incorrectly described a 34-yard Milroe scoring run; ESPN's scoring log lists Milroe touchdowns of 19, 1 and 17 yards.
Alabama's passing totals were efficient rather than explosive. Germie Bernard led Alabama receivers with 7 catches for 111 yards, while Ryan Williams added 53 receiving yards. The bigger theme was that Milroe's legs turned red-zone and short-yardage chances into touchdowns after Auburn had already shown it could take the ball away.
Auburn's Turnover Chance
Auburn forced four Alabama turnovers, including three lost fumbles and one interception. The Tigers turned that into only 14 points, with Cam Coleman catching a 29-yard touchdown from Payton Thorne in the third quarter after two first-half Ian Vachon field goals.
Auburn's own postgame account points to the central problem: the Tigers won the turnover battle but did not convert enough of those fields into touchdowns. Auburn was 4-for-12 on third down and failed on its only fourth-down try, while Alabama went 12-for-18 on third down. That split explains why four takeaways did not flip the result.
Payton Thorne's raw passing line was productive at 24 completions for 301 yards, but the two interceptions and stalled red-zone sequences kept Auburn from turning yardage into pressure. KeAndre Lambert-Smith had 116 receiving yards and Coleman had 78 with the touchdown, giving Auburn enough explosive receiving production to stay interesting without enough finishing efficiency to win.
Season Context
The win gave Kalen DeBoer his first Iron Bowl victory and kept Alabama's postseason hopes alive at the time. Later, Alabama finished 9-4 after losing the ReliaQuest Bowl to Michigan, so the game should be framed as an important rivalry win rather than proof of a completed championship-level season.
For Auburn, the game closed a 5-7 season and made the Texas A&M upset one week earlier feel less like a turning point. For Alabama, it preserved a fifth straight Iron Bowl win and gave DeBoer a clean rivalry result in year one, but the larger season still landed below Alabama's championship standard.
The most responsible summary is therefore narrow: Alabama won because Milroe's rushing touchdowns and third-down offense outweighed Auburn's turnover edge. Anything beyond that needs careful context, because both teams ended 2024 with unresolved questions.
How To Read This Recap
This page is a completed-game recap, so it should not be updated with later roster news unless that news changes how a factual claim is understood. The stable record is the final score, the date, the venue, the scoring sequence and the statistical context available from the box score. Later coaching changes, transfers or injuries belong in separate dated articles.
That boundary helps the archive stay useful. A reader looking up the 2024 Iron Bowl should not have to sort through later speculation to find what happened in the game itself. If future analysis discusses how the result affected Alabama or Auburn in later seasons, it should link back here rather than rewriting the recap around hindsight.
