Auburn beat Alabama 23-0 at West End Park in Birmingham on 18 October 1902. Only one other meeting in the rivalry’s history has been played before November, and it was the following year’s.
An October Iron Bowl
1902 and 1903 are the only autumn meetings the two schools have played outside November; every other one has fallen in November or December, and most modern ones in the last week of November. That these two came in mid- and late October says something about how loosely the early schedules were assembled. Fixtures were arranged season by season, sometimes weeks in advance, sometimes days, and there was no conference structure imposing a shape on the calendar.
The third shutout in a row
Auburn had now kept Alabama off the scoreboard in three consecutive meetings — 1900 apart, where Alabama managed five points, the run of scorelines reads 53-5, 17-0, 23-0. Alabama had scored five points in three years against them.
Eli Abbott was back in charge at Alabama for a fourth season, with James Forman as captain. Auburn’s coaching that season was split, and the records do not establish cleanly who was on the sideline for this particular game.
The high-water mark of the early Auburn run
This was Auburn’s third straight win and their sixth in seven meetings. It was also the last of them. Alabama won in Montgomery the following October, and then won again in 1905 and 1906, taking three of the last five games before the series broke off. By the time the two schools stopped playing in 1907, the early Auburn dominance had been substantially clawed back — a detail that tends to be lost behind the 41-year silence that followed.
