Alabama 5-2, Auburn 4-2: 2026 Iron Bowl Watch After Week 7
The road to the Nov. 28 Iron Bowl changed sharply on Oct. 17. Auburn beat No. 1 Georgia 27-24 in Athens, while Alabama lost 26-10 at Tennessee. Auburn is now 4-2 overall and 2-2 in SEC play; Alabama is 5-2 and 3-2. Both teams have more games before they meet in Tuscaloosa, but their latest results have overturned the early-October picture of an unbeaten Tide and a Tigers team coming off a loss.
Week 7: Auburn Upsets Georgia, Alabama Falls at Tennessee
Auburn trailed Georgia 14-0, scored 24 consecutive points, and then saw the Bulldogs tie the game at 24 with 2:58 left. After a late Georgia fumble, Alex McPherson made a 34-yard field goal as time expired. Byrum Brown rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown and passed for 150 yards and another score. Auburn's 27-24 win was its first against Georgia since 2017. Georgia still gained 440 yards, so the result shows a major breakthrough without erasing every defensive question.
Alabama had a different Saturday in Knoxville. Tennessee won 26-10 and held the Tide to 201 total yards, including 54 rushing. Keelon Russell passed for 147 yards with two interceptions and scored Alabama's only touchdown on a 19-yard run. Tennessee forced four turnovers and held Alabama scoreless after halftime. The Tide had also lost 20-17 to Georgia the previous week, leaving it with consecutive defeats entering its Oct. 24 home game against Texas A&M.
The shared Georgia opponent does not produce a head-to-head prediction: Alabama played Georgia at home on Oct. 10, Auburn visited Athens a week later, and each game unfolded differently. For the Iron Bowl, the useful questions are whether Auburn can sustain the run-and-takeaway formula it showed in Athens and whether Alabama can restore its offense against SEC defenses. Neither Oct. 17 result decides what happens on Nov. 28.
Week 6: Georgia Ends Alabama's Unbeaten Start
Alabama rallied from a 10-0 deficit to lead Georgia 14-10 at halftime, but the Bulldogs won 20-17 in Tuscaloosa on Oct. 10. Russell passed for 185 yards, and the Tide gained 346 total yards. The defeat moved Alabama to 5-1 before the Tennessee trip. Auburn did not play in Week 6, giving the Tigers an open week before their Georgia game.
Week 5: Alabama Pulls Away, Auburn Falls at Tennessee
Keelon Russell completed 16 of 22 passes for 285 yards and three touchdowns against Mississippi State, then added a 17-yard touchdown run. Alabama gained 483 yards and forced four turnovers, converting those takeaways into 21 points. The Crimson Tide scored two touchdowns in every quarter and held the Bulldogs to six second-half points in the 56-23 win. Alabama moved to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in SEC play.
Auburn led Tennessee 7-3 at halftime before DeSean Bishop's second-half rushing scores turned the game. Byrum Brown rushed for 107 yards and accounted for both Auburn touchdowns, including a fourth-quarter pass to Arlis Boardingham that cut the deficit to 17-14. After forcing a punt, Auburn took over at its own 5-yard line but was stopped on third-and-1 and fourth-and-1. Bishop scored again, and Tennessee won 24-14. Bishop finished with 220 rushing yards and three touchdowns; Auburn fell to 3-2 overall and 1-2 in the SEC.
Alabama's Week 5 result strengthens its early case as a productive, turnover-generating team, though it does not settle how it will fare against every SEC opponent. Auburn again showed it can stay in a game, but stopping the run and sustaining a late drive are now urgent tests. Those are separate trends, not a prediction of their November matchup.
Week 4: Two SEC Wins, Different Routes
Russell completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns against South Carolina. He also rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown, reaching 400 yards of total offense. Ryan Coleman-Williams caught five passes for 98 yards and two scores. Alabama led 35-10 at halftime and finished with a 49-18 win.
Auburn's 21-15 win over Vanderbilt hinged in part on special teams. After Byrum Brown connected with Chas Nimrod for a first-quarter touchdown, Auburn blocked a Vanderbilt punt and returned it for another score. A third-quarter touchdown drive gave the Tigers a 21-9 lead. Vanderbilt closed to 21-15 with just over six minutes left, but Auburn kept possession and ran out the clock. Auburn moved to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play.
Through Week 4, Alabama had scored at least 45 points in all four games, while Auburn's Vanderbilt win depended on a special-teams score and a late clock-killing drive. The opponents and game states were different; the useful rivalry questions were whether Alabama's passing production would hold against later SEC defenses and whether Auburn could create enough offense when a game was not decided by a takeaway or blocked kick.
Week 3: Alabama's Comeback, Auburn's First Loss
Florida State led Alabama 21-6 in the second quarter. Keelon Russell threw three touchdown passes in the final 2:36 before halftime, a stretch interrupted by a weather delay, and Alabama took a 26-21 lead. Russell finished 23-of-30 for 320 passing yards, three passing touchdowns and no interceptions; he added 56 net rushing yards and a rushing score. Alabama generated 567 yards of offense and won 50-36. The comeback shows another response to adversity, while the 36 points allowed are a reminder that the defense still has questions to answer.
Florida beat Auburn 44-39 at Jordan-Hare Stadium. Auburn tied the game 17-17 in the second quarter, then trailed 41-24 in the fourth before Byrum Brown led two late touchdown drives. Florida gained 495 yards, including 243 rushing yards; Jadan Baugh supplied 162 rushing yards and three touchdowns. Auburn gained 373 yards and recovered to within five points, but Florida recovered the final onside kick. Brown's late production matters, and so does the ground defense's first SEC test.
These were different opponents and game conditions. Alabama's comeback and Auburn's late rally show resilience, but neither is a head-to-head measurement. The more useful November questions are whether Alabama can limit explosive scoring drives and whether Auburn can contain the run while sustaining its own offense against SEC teams.

Week 2 Update: Both Teams Reach 2-0
Alabama trailed Kentucky 17-13 at halftime before scoring 32 unanswered points in a 45-17 road win. The Crimson Tide held Kentucky to 62 yards after halftime. Keelon Russell completed 16 of 23 passes for 188 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, Daniel Hill rushed for 104 yards, and Luke Metz returned an interception for a touchdown. The comeback added a conference-road result to the Week 1 baseline while leaving Russell's two turnovers as an area to monitor.
Auburn's home opener began with Andre Jordan Jr. returning an interception for a touchdown ten seconds into the game, which Auburn identified as the fastest score in the program's modern era. Byrum Brown completed 18 of 29 passes for 226 yards and two touchdowns, rushed for 88 yards, and caught a touchdown pass. Omar Mabson added 108 rushing yards as Auburn beat Southern Miss 43-8. The result was more comfortable than the Baylor opener, but opponent strength and game context still make direct Alabama-Auburn comparisons premature.
Alabama's Signal: Control at the Line of Scrimmage
Alabama's clearest opening-day result was not a passing touchdown. All five offensive touchdowns came on the ground, and the Crimson Tide finished with 227 rushing yards while holding East Carolina to two. Russell completed 18 of 30 passes for 256 yards and added 86 rushing yards and a touchdown, giving him 342 yards of total offense in his first start.
The defense also produced a direct scoring play. Yhonzae Pierre returned an interception 27 yards for a touchdown and recorded a sack. Through an Iron Bowl lens, the useful Week 1 questions are whether Alabama can maintain that rushing balance against SEC defenses and whether Pierre's early impact carries into the conference schedule. The opener supplies a baseline, not a November answer.
Auburn's Signal: Resilience With Warning Signs
Auburn's first game under Alex Golesh supplied a very different data point. Brown completed 26 of 35 passes for 259 yards, then scored the go-ahead touchdown on an 11-yard run. But Baylor intercepted him three times and recorded five sacks. Baylor also outgained Auburn 436-389, making the final defensive stand essential to the result.
Winters delivered that stand by stopping Matthew Klopfenstein short of the goal line on Baylor's two-point try. Auburn's recap called it the program's first one-point win since the 2010 Iron Bowl. Against stronger opponents, Auburn still needed better quarterback protection and fewer turnovers.
The 17-16 Historical Echo
Auburn's 17-16 score also matches one of the rivalry's most famous finals: the 1972 "Punt Bama Punt" Iron Bowl. In that game, Auburn erased Alabama's late 16-3 lead with two blocked-punt returns and won 17-16. The matching score is a useful archive link, but the circumstances were unrelated. One was a season opener against Baylor in Atlanta; the other was the Iron Bowl at Legion Field.
