Keelon Russell's First Four Starts: 2026 Iron Bowl Context
Keelon Russell has led Alabama to a 4-0 start in his first four starts. He produced 342 yards of total offense against East Carolina, threw two interceptions in a comeback win at Kentucky, accounted for 376 yards against Florida State, and reached 400 against South Carolina. His latest game included four passing touchdowns in a 49-18 win. These September results show his range as a passer and runner, though they cannot settle a November matchup with Auburn.
Russell's Starting-Debut Numbers
Alabama's official recap credits Russell with 18 completions on 30 attempts, 256 passing yards, no passing touchdowns and no interceptions. He also led the Crimson Tide with 86 rushing yards and scored on a three-yard run late in the second quarter. Alabama says his 342 total yards were one short of Bryce Young's program mark for a quarterback making his first start.
The team context matters as much as the quarterback line. Alabama gained 487 total yards, rushed for 227, and scored all five offensive touchdowns on the ground. The Crimson Tide defense limited East Carolina to 162 total yards and two rushing yards. That combination allowed Russell to play from ahead rather than face a close fourth-quarter finish.
What the Opener Adds to the Iron Bowl Watch
Russell started the opener, protected the ball and created yards as both a passer and runner in a run-heavy scoring plan. His later SEC games offered a different test than East Carolina.
For Auburn, Russell's mobility is the early tactical issue worth tracking. His 86 rushing yards were not incidental to Alabama's opener; they led the team. Whether that remains a major part of the offense against conference defenses will matter more to a November matchup than the 38-point margin against East Carolina.
What the First Start Could Not Prove
Russell did not throw a touchdown pass in the opener, but that fact does not by itself show a weakness. Alabama scored repeatedly on the ground and led 38-7 at halftime. A different game state may require a different distribution of throws, designed runs and red-zone decisions.
Four starts cannot guarantee Russell will start the Iron Bowl. Performance, health and coaching decisions can change a depth chart over the remaining schedule. His early results belong in the season record, not in a prediction presented as certainty.
Week 2 Checkpoint: Alabama at Kentucky
Alabama's first SEC road test added a less comfortable data point. The Crimson Tide trailed Kentucky 17-13 at halftime before scoring 32 unanswered points in a 45-17 win. Russell completed 16 of 23 passes for 188 yards and one touchdown, but he also threw two interceptions. The result showed Alabama could respond after halftime while reinforcing that ball security remains part of Russell's development.
Week 3: Three Passing Scores Against Florida State
Florida State led Alabama 21-6 in the second quarter before Russell helped reverse the game. He threw three touchdown passes in the final 2:36 of the first half, giving Alabama a 26-21 halftime lead. Russell finished 23-of-30 for 320 passing yards, three touchdown passes and no interceptions; his 56 net rushing yards included a 57-yard touchdown run. Alabama won 50-36, and its offense totaled 567 yards.
On Sept. 22, Alabama reported that the Maxwell Football Club had named Russell its Shaun Alexander Award Player of the Week for this performance. Across the first three starts, he showed both passing and rushing production, while his two interceptions at Kentucky remained a ball-security concern.
Week 4: Four Passing Scores Against South Carolina
Russell completed 21 of 27 passes for 365 yards and four touchdowns in Alabama's 49-18 win over South Carolina on Sept. 26. He added 35 rushing yards and a nine-yard touchdown run, giving him 400 yards of total offense. Ryan Coleman-Williams caught two of Russell's touchdown passes as Alabama built a 35-10 halftime lead.
The first four starts now include a run-heavy opener, a road comeback with two interceptions, a high-scoring comeback against Florida State, and a four-touchdown passing game against South Carolina. Auburn will face a quarterback whose September production has come in several different game states when the teams meet on Nov. 28.
The 2026 Iron Bowl remains scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 28, at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa. The exact kickoff and network remain unassigned; Alabama's current fan guide lists 2:30 or 6:30 p.m. CT as the possible slots. The season watch follows both teams' results through Week 5.
