The 1988 Iron Bowl was a defensive slugfest at Legion Field. In a game where yards were hard to come by, #7 Auburn defeated #17 Alabama 15-10 to secure a share of the SEC Championship.
The Defensive Stand
Auburn’s offense, known for its power running game, was held in check for much of the day. However, the defense stepped up. Led by Tracy Rocker, the Tigers stifled Alabama’s attack. A crucial touchdown pass from Reggie Slack to Lawyer Tillman provided the offensive spark Auburn needed.
Alabama’s Missed Chances
Alabama had opportunities but failed to capitalize in the red zone. The loss cost the Crimson Tide a shot at the SEC title. For Auburn, it was another brick in the wall of their dominance over Alabama during the late 80s, marking their third straight win in the series.
